Massive Action Gaming!

Once again, I buy a game, get caught up in it, and forget to post. This time the culprit is Massive Action Game (MAG).

This was touted as being a new breed of co-operative multiplayer FPS… and in many respects it is. You do actually play games of 128-a-side (total player count: 256), and you are tasked with working together to attack or defend specific objectives in the same map.

On the service, MAG seems to be yet another modern/near-future FPS. There’s a little futuristic tech, but it’s generally a descendant of Counterstrike, and is visually nothing to write home about. There’s still plenty of griefers out there, and though I have not personally experienced it, the forums indicate that teabagging is still an observed practice.

Despite all this, and despite my preference for fast-paced high-action scifi FPS (like older generations of Quake and Unreal Tournament), I’m having a great time. Part of it is that there is an undercurrent starting to build in the culture. Players are starting to work together and use their headsets in a constructive manner. It definitely helps that a lot of the hardcore every-man-for-himself players are starting to drift back to games more suited to them.

I’m still learning new things about how to play the game. It’s definitely clear that there is no single skill or equipment set, or strategy that will win the game.

If you’re playing MAG and want to catch up for a round sometime, let me know. Provided, P isn’t already playing…
