Watch The Expendables or risk losing your manhood

For those who don’t know it, The Expendables is Sylvester Stallone’s all-star action movie. It’s guaranteed to be a great nostalgic revisiting of a genre of film that has fallen into disrepair. This fan has a challenge to the men of the world:

I’m with him. This is movie you shouldn’t be seeing on your computer screen, or even burned to DVD and watched on your 46 inch plasma. Buy a fucking movie ticket and see it the way action movies should be seen: in a theatre on a huge silver screen, with a sound system you could never hope to own.

Auckland Sanity Trip: Day 3

Ferry station clock tower

Caught up with Aidan today. Definitely been looking forward to that for a long time. We did catch up briefly last year, but we were busy gaming at Phenomenon. It’s always fun to visit people in their home town. You get a bit of a local’s perspective on the place, but also discover new things together.

Piha Beach

Piha Beach

Piha beach is one of Auckland’s more famous beaches, due to its dangerous rips and reality TV show about the local live saving club, similar to Australia’s Bondi Rescue. We drove there from Auckland city in about an hour, hoping to get a good view and a good lunch.

While no culinary delights were to be found, I do have to admit that Piha is far nicer than Bondi. While it obviously wasn’t summer, we couldn’t have picked a sunnier day. There were a few people enjoying the black sand, but there certainly wasn’t any crowd. Definitely great for photos.

Auckland Sanity Trip: Day 2

Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Wharf

I’ve just returned from a 5km round tour through volcanic rainforest to the peak of Mount Rangitoto, 259 metres above sea level.

The trip to the top was physically hard. It’s a steady climb over an uneven trail to the top. The trail is mainly pebbles of volcanic rock (basalt, I think) and the wet conditions made for an occasionally muddy experience. Half way up, I stopped to take my jumper off and steam was coming off my shoulders!

Newsflash: The house across the road is on fire

If you don’t believe me, start by looking at these photos:

I took them a few minutes ago. The first suspicion I had was the smell of burning rubber in my room, but I couldn’t see the source, even looking out my window. It wasn’t until I opened the door to call one of my cats in that I saw embers in the air.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a house fire up close and personal before, but I am proud to say that I kept my head and called 000 before grabbing the camera. Which leads me to my dilemma: is it okay to be posting these photos? I mean, I can see how people might think me heartless and perhaps even indulging in schadenfreude with this act. I’m no journalist, I’m not getting paid for this, so is this benefiting from other people’s tragedy?

Edit: The fire got a brief mention in the news this morning

Inception

Inception

Chris Nolan’s masterpiece Inception is much more than just your regular summer blockbuster, full of gunfights (there are plenty), explosions (there are a few), and ground breaking special effects (they abound) – it’s a thought-provoking investigation into the nature of dreams and the subconscious.

The film’s premise is that with the right skills and equipment, people can share each other’s dreams, building dreamscapes and populating them with their subconscious. While this can be put to a variety of uses, the more common one is “extraction” – a form of espionage where the subject’s subconscious is encouraged to put secret knowledge into a secure place like a safe or vault. The extracting team can then break in and steal that knowledge.

Cobb (Leonardo DiCapprio) leads a team of professional dreamthieves on a mission to do the reverse: to plant a thought that will change the subject’s behaviour in a specific way. This is a much harder task as it must be done in such a way that the subject believes it is their own idea, and not something foreign which can be rejected.

Of course, the difficulty is compounded because Cobb brings personal problems to the job. These problems can’t be avoided and will have a very profound effect on Cobb and everybody else in the dreamscape around him.

This is your spoiler warning: I intend to discuss some specifics beyond the jump.
