Jumping on the bandwagon after all

Just quickly. In an effort to stay “hip” and “with it” (despite turning 29 today), I have joined the Twitter crowd.

It’s a nifty little thing that, on the surface, seems to be nothing more than a very limited self-promotion platform. “Microblogging”, it’s called; posting every little minutiae about your life. It’s the Facebook status update, without the Facebook.

Skinjobs in BSG 1980?

Just quickly before I head to bed. Somewhere out in the blogosphere, I stumbled upon this little nugget: BSG 1980 had Cylons that looked like humans!

Furthermore, it sounds like the explanation for such anthropomorphism is brought across from old to new:

Dr. Zee gets a lengthy scene to explain how this came about. His explanation seems a bit long and ponderous until you realize he’s just spent 4 minutes explaining what the new series has taken 4 whole seasons to get around to. Huh.

I might have to watch these episodes. I should have realised that all that nonsense about it all “has happened before and will happened again” was more than just spiritual nonsense from inside the setting. It’s breaking the fourth wall.

Grr.

Training a new generation of DMs

It’s good to see that the boys at Penny Arcade are passing on the important things about Dungeon Mastering. Keeping the Old Ways alive is very important, especially since D&D 4e is nothing more than a wargame with named units. I don’t care what they say about Skill Challenges and roleplaying, they’ve stripped out almost everything that wasn’t about fighting.

Of course, some would argue they haven’t gone far enough. Certainly, the blog post that accompanies the strip remembers:

His group can scarcely believe the stories I tell them about earlier versions of the game, of sundered stats and experience loss and THAC0, when players could win and still lose.

Oh for the good ol’ days…

Font fun with Fondu

I had actually thought that with the advent of MacOS X, Apple had done away with font incompatibilities. It installs Windows and Linux fonts with no problem, so there’s no need to have your own font file format, right?

My wife discovered the .dfont file this morning at work. As of this writing, the Wikipedia entry on the format is just a stub.

Datafork TrueType is a font wrapper used on Apple Macintosh computers running Mac OS X. It is a TrueType suitcase with the resource map in the data fork, rather than the resource fork as had been the case in Mac OS 9. It uses the file extension .dfont.

In plain English, it’s got all your regular TTF information in a different part of the file. Kind of like a .ZIP file for fonts. Useful, except only Macs read it. Fortunately, we have fondu. It’s available for all Unix systems (including Mac OS X) and provides a suite of utilities to convert different formats of TrueType fonts.

Terminator Salvation Trailer

Well, the next Terminator film looks awesome. I found T3 a bit underwhelming. It had some good points, but felt a bit flat in comparison to the relentless pursuit in T1 and the awesome action of T2.

I’m not sure whether Terminator Salvation will have any direct links to the Sarah Connor Chronicles, but I figure I should probably get the series at some point.
