BSG: Haven’t we played this game before?

Last time, I speculated that things aren’t all they seem with the Final Five. Now that we’ve found out Earth ain’t it’s all cracked up to be, everybody gets a bit introspective.

Spoilers ahead.

In case you missed me ramble on about video games

Originally, I was going to play and review Fallout 3. Then Flip started it while I watched and realised that it was just Oblivion with guns. So I figured why not just play that and hit the two main expansions. So I’ve spent the last week making a new character (a Mage) and levelling him up a bit (he’s now the head of the mage’s guild). And now I’m spent.

I got home after work last night with no desire to hit The Shivering Isles or even Fallout 3. I will get there, but I’ve run out of steam for the moment.

Instead, I turned back to Rock Band. It’s good for a quick pick-up game and we’re slowly garnering more songs for it. I’m picking up some tracks that were on Guitar Hero 2 & 3. The note tracking is different (and generally easier), but I’m also getting them for the other instruments. In particular, I like singing them.

Anyway, now that things are a little quiet on the release front, I’m starting to look at slightly newer games. Speaking to nobody recently, I’ve been convinced to try the revisioned Prince of Persia. Though it probably could have been done under a different title, I’ll survive. It looks like fun.

BSG: Homecoming… sorta

I think that I’ve now seen every bit of footage first outed in the BSG trailer I posted before Christmas. It was short, I know, but I had hoped that it would look a bit further forward than four episodes. That being said, it mis-represents much of what it depicts. Very clever editing on the part of those who prepared it.

Right, enough of that. Spoilers follow. Consider yourself warned.

Why no perspective?

According to Wired, there is a group of Heath Ledger fans demanding a moratorium on big-screen portrayals of everybody’s favourite clown. According to the article:

“We truly believe Ledger’s performance as Joker is the best an actor could ever do,” the site’s team leader, Fer Barbella, told Wired.com in an e-mail interview.

“Any other performance will be below expectations for sure, so we want to forever keep Ledger’s Joker as the one,” added Barbella, who launched The Ultimate Joker site last week with his colleague Nico Pimentel.

Now, I admit I had a good time with The Dark Knight, but I honestly believe that if Ledger gets an Oscar for his performance, it’ll mostly be a sympathy vote. That Joker was edgy, and anarchic, and vicious, and very very disturbing. But worthy of an Academy award? Hardly.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, can we look objectively at the demands of these obsessed fans? They are requiring that one of the staple villains of the Batman canon be taken off the big screen. Never mind that Ledger needed a script and a director to perform off. Never mind that the Joker can (and has been) written and performed a whole bunch of different ways, and there will be more to come.

Sure, the current fad in comic book movies is for Dark and Gritty(tm), and this calls for an inhumanly intense and bipolar Joker, doesn’t mean the next time round it will be the same. Or that it won’t be better. Ledger doesn’t have a monopoly on that character, and other actors shouldn’t be denied a chance to try it out.

Maybe I’m just getting worked up over nothing, but Ledger was nothing special, and just because he took too many pills, doesn’t mean we should claim him to be some sort of shining light in Hollywood.

Commenting (part 2)

After a few people made some attempts to use the commenting system (thanks guys!), I’ve decided to keep the CAPTCHA. Overall, people don’t seem to have trouble with it, even if they have to reload it a couple times.

I have, however, relaxed the rules which queue comments for moderation. This was causing confusion for some people, and more time doing admin for me, as I had to approve the comments. Some comments will still be moderated if they look like spam, but that should be pretty rare.

Thanks to everybody who helped out.
