Commenting

A few posts back, lotusvine sent me an e-mail claiming she couldn’t get past my CAPTCHA (you know, that stupid thing where you type in some words to prove you’re not a spambot). Personally, I have no problems. I tested out the CAPTCHA software before I installed it and found it to be effective yet simple (and it’s used to improve OCR software, which is giving back to the community).

I know some of you actually do read these posts, so I’m curious to know how many of you have tried to comment but found it too difficult.

Normally, I turn off the LiveJournal comments on the crossposts because I don’t want to have to follow comment threads on two sites, but because there may be difficulties, I’m leaving them on this one time.

Bacon Explosion

There’s no way to come up with a post title that can do this justice, other than the name of the dish, so I’m not even going to try. I got wind of this from some good friends who are bacon addicts, and was intrigued. But it wasn’t until I got a hold of the recipe and saw the pictures that I became seriously afraid.

You see, what the Frankensteins behind this artery-clogging offering to the gods of angioplasty have done is made a woven mat of bacon, added a layer of seasoned pork mince, sprinkled with cooked bacon, then rolled the whole thing up and slow-cooked it over a hickory fire.

Now, I love bacon and pork, but do these people understand the forces they’re playing with? There’s some primal pig sitting in a primeval sty just waiting to get out and give us all heart attacks. I swear that every time a Bacon Explosion is made, the sty gate is opened just that extra inch…

So over to you… what’s the unhealthiest thing you can come up with?

Hot and blue!

Even though he’s very late in taking the piss of Mass Effect, Shamus Young has some interesting points regarding the Asari in general, and the consort in particular.

Personally I’m slightly disturbed by xenoeroticism, but Bioware obviously thought there was a market for that sort of thing. Can anybody tell me they weren’t at least somewhat put off by the whole notion of sticking it inside the blue thing with tentacles on her head?

Oh yeah, Lucas did it first with the Twi’lek.

Easy spaghetti and meatballs

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Jamie Oliver. Not only does he have great taste in food, he’s passionate about making good food accessible to plebs like you and me.

I’ve recently come across his Ministry of Food series of free videos, where he shows you how to prepare a great dish in almost no time. Watching his “Spaghetti meatballs” video on the train home this afternoon, I was inspired to cook it up right away. Fortunately, our only other option was leftovers from the mixed grill on Monday night, so Flip was more than amenable.

Of course, I had to put my own spin on things, and they turned out awesome:

Another reflection on FMA

A while ago, I wrote about the Fullmetal Alchemist anime series. I mentioned that I found it much more fulfilling than traditional anime fare because it touched on social issues, and presented very human characters in a variety of situations that allowed them to grow.

Lately, I’ve been reading the series over at OneManga. It moves slower than the anime, which is to be expected since the anime was a closed story arc, while the manga is open-ended, but it’s still exciting and touching to read.

I just came across one scene that is well crafted, both in terms of its position in the local narrative, as well as the art. It highlights both the limitation of the Elrics’ Alchemy, and the tragedy that they must feel every day, which drives them to find a way to break the laws of nature.

Maybe I’m just a softie, but I can’t help but be moved by such a powerful scene. I only wish I could write as well as this.
