This began as a rambling comment to nobody’s post on games as art, which I decided to cut short so I could share my ideas with the rest of you. I’m not sure where it’s going, so hang on.
Mummy trepidations
I’m a fan of the Mummy series. Had an absolute blast with the first movie, and while The Mummy Returns had some issues with sequelitis, I’m a big enough fan of the pulp genre to forgive all but the most blatant transgressions.
So, I was a little surprised to find that I hadn’t found out about Tomb of the Dragon Emperor earlier. It features a change of setting and subject matter (we’re no longer in Egypt hunting, er being hunted by, mummies). Instead, we’re off to China to save the world from a resurrected sorcerer-emperor. Sounds good on paper, but I do have reservations.
Site update
I’m in the midst of doing some updates to the WordPress installation at the moment. Don’t worry, it’s just the usual early-life stuff for any site installation: I’m hunting for a nice theme (will probably end up either making my own or heavily modifying an “open-source” one from the net), installing some more anti-spam stuff, and laying the groundwork for future growth (because all new blogs grow up to become huge hubs of community activity, right… )
Edit: I’ve just upgraded to 2.6.1 using the SVN method. That was an experience. Definitely easier than the manual zip and download, and also the procedure was easier than I anticipated. Of course, prior to upgrade, WordPress was telling me that I needed to go to 2.6. Once I did that, it told me I needed to go to 2.6.1. I know that I could have gone straight to 2.6.1 if I had been told about it
iPhone Nano by Christmas?
No company in consumer technology engenders as many rumours or as much wishful thinking as Apple, but even this takes the cake. Apparently the UK’s Daily Mail is short on real news, so they are reporting that an “industry insider” believes that Apple will be making all our dreams come true with a smaller and cheaper iPhone.
Fable 2 expectations
Generally, I don’t follow speculation about new games until they’re ready to drop, but E3 is on and Gamespot’s article on Fable 2 hilights some interesting mechanics which could make it quite fun.
After Shamus Young’s panning of the first game, I have to say I’m a bit wary of any big claims that Molyneux wants to make regarding a sequel, but I’m liking some of the stuff I see there. None of them are necessarily huge improvements on Oblivion, but if the world is as open and free as it sounds, then I’ll probably pick it up.
I’m looking forward to a world where I get the choice of silencing the bard who sings of the ignominious goins on during my last adventure. And apparently consequences for unprotected sex. We’ll see if that gets past a ratings board.
nobody has previously mentioned that I should give the original a try, and I might do that. After all, even independent writers have to be controversial to keep their audience coming back.
Maybe after I’m done with DBZ: Burst Limit.
